Anthropic said Oct8 that it will commit $150 million over three years to the US Department of Energy's Genesis Mission. The package includes Claude, Claude Code, API credits, training, and technical support for several hundred projects across more than 15 agencies, including NASA, NIH, and NSF, with work focused in areas such as fusion and quantum computing.

Anthropic also points to Claude Science, 10,000 free or discounted academic seats, and a Model Hardware Standard for AI agents operating lab instruments. None of this gives an independent result for a scientific project, and the post does not publish the credit terms. For builders, the important signal is a push from general chat toward domain tools, research workflows, and controlled lab use.

What you can do with it

There is no general public signup in the announcement. If you work in academic science, check Claude's current scientist programs and keep a small reproducible task ready for a credit application; do not plan a product around access until the terms and data rules are public.

Our take

Anthropic is trying to make its model part of the research workflow, not just the researcher's browser. That can create strong examples and useful tools, but the dollar figure is not a product result. The proof will be public methods, useful datasets, and repeatable scientific work.
