Google Docs begins native Markdown file editing

toolsmarkdowngooglecollaboration

Google Workspace has announced Markdown file handling across Drive and Docs. Users can preview Markdown files in Drive and open them in Google Docs for editing and collaboration, bringing a common text format closer to the standard document workflow.

Google describes Markdown as a format used widely by developers and large language model tools. The change reduces the need to copy text into a separate editor before a team can review, comment on, or revise a file. It keeps a plain-text source inside an existing Workspace process.

The audience is technical teams that exchange prompts, documentation, specifications, and other structured text. This is a workflow improvement, not an AI model release. Its value will depend on formatting fidelity and on whether teams can return clean Markdown to repositories and other tools.
