Ai2 releases AstaBrief as an open model for cited research reports

Ai2 introduced AstaBrief, an open 8B model and training-data release for reports with citations. Ai2 says its Asta Fast mode took 51.1 seconds, compared with 178.5 seconds for Thinking mode on the same task. The organization also reports early use across Asta, including users who returned on multiple days.
The useful pattern is a research workflow with a visible speed and depth trade-off. A fast pass can gather sources and shape a draft, while a slower pass handles harder synthesis. Open weights may help institutions that cannot send unpublished research to a hosted service, but every report still needs checking.
Run Fast on a narrow question with a fixed source set. Compare citations, omissions, and correction time against a slower run, then track human verification cost. Watch for independent evaluations outside Ai2's own usage data.
