Shopify puts AI store building into a visual Canvas

Shopify announced Canvas on October 1 as a workspace for building an online store with its Sidekick agent. Merchants can see pages together, pan and zoom, edit directly or use chat, and preview the real theme code with interaction and different screen sizes. Shopify says Sidekick made more than 25 million theme edits in the first half of 2026.

For makers, the notable shift is from generating a page mockup to changing a live project surface with an agent. That makes visual review, version control, and safe rollback part of the product experience, not an afterthought. Shopify also says Canvas is early and does not yet replace the existing editor.

Test one small store change across desktop and mobile. Compare the rendered result with the underlying theme, review each file change, and keep a rollback point. Watch how well the agent preserves existing theme behavior and customizations.
