Photon raises $4.5M after signing up 40,000 developers

Photon raised $4.5 million in seed funding on October 1 for tools that let developers build agents over iMessage and WhatsApp. TechCrunch reports that the startup says it has more than 40,000 developer sign-ups, 10x revenue growth in four months, and paying customers. Its integrations include platforms and companies building consumer, finance, and other vertical agents.
For makers, the important shape is distribution through a channel people already use. A messaging surface can reduce the cost of trying an agent, but it also makes identity, consent, delivery failures, rate limits, and handoff to a human part of the core product.
Test one message-based job with a clear completion state. Measure activation, successful handoff, repeat use, support load, and paid conversion, and verify the company-reported sign-ups against active developers before using the number to plan growth.
