Google launched Universal Cart in the United States on October 15. A shopper can collect products from multiple stores in one cart, receive alerts for price drops or restocks and see eligible card rewards or promotional codes. TechCrunch reports that the service uses the Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard that also appears in newer AI shopping efforts from OpenAI and Amazon. Google is starting with a US rollout rather than a global launch.

For merchants, the change is a new handoff between product discovery and checkout. A store still needs accurate inventory, price, shipping and promotion data, but the shopper may arrive from a model-led comparison rather than a direct search. Universal Cart does not show that a store will receive profitable sales. Track assisted orders, margin after discounts, returns and the share of carts that finish outside the store's usual path.

What you can do with it

Try the shopping flow from a US account with two products from different stores. For a commerce product, map the feeds and checkout steps needed for UCP, then compare completed orders, discount cost and returns with ordinary product-search traffic before investing in an integration.

Our take

This is a distribution change for commerce, not a new shopping model. A shared cart can reduce checkout steps, but it may also make stores compete on price and promotion. The winners will be merchants with clean data and enough margin to pay for the extra sale.
