Satlyt raises $8M to run AI on satellites

Satlyt raised an $8 million seed round on October 1 to build software for running AI on satellites. TechCrunch reports that the company has already flown two demonstration missions and previously ran Google's Gemma on a Momentus spacecraft, reducing a transmission about software errors by more than 60%, according to the company. A mission will test workloads with NASA and partners.
For makers, the story is about moving computation closer to the data source. Less downlink can reduce delay and transmission work, but an onboard system must handle limited hardware, failure recovery, and updates without a constant connection.
Use the same test for any edge deployment: compare data sent, useful results, latency, recovery time, and total operating cost. Keep company savings claims separate from measured results, and wait for the new mission's public readout before broad conclusions.
