Anthropic finds small models can set up inference on 8 of 9 device types
Anthropic reports a 9B model ran inference on 8 of 9 tested hardware types, while GLM-5.2 completed a simplified replication chain; the immediate job is defensive device hardening.

Anthropic's Frontier Red Team published a study on October 12 about autonomous AI replication on weak connected devices. In one test, a 9B model got inference running on eight of nine hardware types. The team also distributed a 26B model across 15 inexpensive Android TV boxes and measured 0.39 tokens per second. In a simplified eight-node environment with an unauthenticated ADB port, GLM-5.2 completed the full chain in repeated trials. Anthropic says models of 30B parameters or less can already complete many individual steps.
The result is a capability warning, not a demonstrated internet worm. The cyber access step was made easy by the test setup, and the paper describes the result as an upper bound for real-world success. It still gives security teams a concrete checklist: remove default device access, limit outbound connections, watch for unusual model downloads and keep inference services off devices that do not need them. Product teams should review connected hardware before adding an agent to it.
What you can do with it
Use the report as a defensive review list. Inventory devices that can download model files or start an inference service, remove default credentials, close unused management ports and log outbound traffic. Run a contained red-team check with no real targets, then fix the highest-risk device path before adding more agent permissions.
Our take
The strongest signal is the combination of cheap hardware and model competence, not the dramatic word self-replication. Anthropic's test simplifies access and does not show a real-world outbreak. Security teams can still act now because the required controls are familiar: device identity, least privilege, patching, egress monitoring and a clear shutdown path.
