a16z finds AI spending concentrated in a small prosumer group

consumer-aispendingmakers

a16z's U.S. panel found 4.5% paid for ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude in August, while the top 1% spent $903/month and 19.5% of AI spend; paid maker tools still have a narrow buyer base.

The Rundown's Oct 9 issue called out a16z's seventh consumer AI report, which added observed U.S. card spending from YipitData to rankings based on web traffic and mobile use. In August, 4.5% of eligible people in the panel paid for ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude. The top 1% of AI payers spent an average of $903 per month and accounted for 19.5% of observed AI spending; the top 10% accounted for about half.

The report also finds that ChatGPT has about three times as many U.S. consumer paid subscribers as Claude or Gemini, while heavy spenders favour coding, productivity, and creative tools. The panel is not a census or company-revenue report, and it misses many reasons people buy. Its value is showing that paying demand is concentrated in prosumers, not proving that every maker tool has a large market.

What you can do with it

Use the report to choose a buyer, not to claim a huge market: target prosumers who already pay for coding, creative, or productivity tools. Test one outcome with a real price and a clear success measure; do not use the 4.5% figure as demand for your product.

Our take

This is useful because it measures receipts rather than visits, and it explains why small creator products can sell while mass adoption stays shallow. The catch is panel scope: U.S. e-receipts are not total revenue, so the ranking cannot set your price or prove that a niche is large.
