Google's pilot covers about 100 publishers and pays when content materially contributes to Gemini AI Overviews, Ars Technica reports. Citing The Information, it says some small and midsize sites receive roughly one-tenth of one percent of their ad revenue. The figures describe an early program, not a general publisher rate or confirmed long-term business model.

For makers, the story puts a number beside a hard distribution question: AI use may not replace the source's traffic or ad value. It also changes how publishers measure licensing, attribution and the cost of keeping information online.

Track referrals, conversions and any direct payment separately. Test whether structured pages, clear provenance and a strong owned channel improve the result, then compare the return with the work required to support an AI-search program before treating it as earned revenue.
